Giant Trevally Fishing
'The Bulldog of the Ocean! One of the strongest pound for pound sea fish. Surface popper casting for Giant Trevally or GTs as they are also commonly called is one of the most exciting forms of fishing. Popper casting for GTs is predominantly 'SightFishing'. It is incredibly exciting to watch as the huge head and shoulders of a massive GT breaks the surface as it devours a well placed cast popper. Watching a 30kg GT chasing your popper 5 meter from the boat is a sight you will never forget. The Andamans holds huge stocks of medium to Xl size Giant Trevally, the Islands south of Port Blair produced vary fast popper casting action and the local record stands at 72 GTs in day! We have caught and released GTs here over 50kg and lost a fish after 1.5 hour fought on a 80 lbs. trolling outfit after the angler gave up due to fatigue, we estimated the fish to be over 75kg! We use 7 to 8ft long 20-50lbs popper rods with Shimano Stella or Daiwa Saltiga Dogfight reels spooled with 80-100 lbs braid line. We have a stock of Thai Handmade poppers free to use for the anglers onboard. Many of the biggest GTs we have caught early morning hours from our inflatable RIB dinghy very close to the rocks. The GTs feed on crabs and shellfish early in the morning and in the late evening near the rocks, and by using the small dinghy we don not spook them.
The Andaman Islands lies 405 miles North West of Phuket, an archipelago of 329 islands belonging to India. After 50 years of virtual isolation from the outside world, the Indian government lifted its restricted access to the islands, and allowed limited environmentally friendly tourism development. It is only since 1993 that the Indian authorities have allowed scuba diving and sportfishing.
Commercial fishing is very light in most areas, which is one of the main reasons the waters of the Andaman Islands are "Teeming with fish." It is a vast area of almost 8,500 square kilometers, dotted with tropical islands and a submarine mountainous seascape providing an almost unlimited playground for game fish species and big-game fisherman.
We pioneered the first fishing trips to this magical area 8 years ago, which gives us the upper hand when it comes to terms of experience and knowledge of the species, and also the best fishing grounds.
Along the East and West coasts of Narcondam and Barren Islands there are drop-offs of 1000 to 2000 meters depth which attract huge Black and Blue Marlin, Broadbill Swordfish, Sailfish and a multitude of other highly sought after big-game species.
